In this edition, we're excited to bring you a special double feature interview with Abi and Steve Evans, the dynamic husband-and-wife duo behind Kingston Landscape Group. As co-owners of this thriving business and phenomenal Perennial Platinum Plus Partners, Abi and Steve have been instrumental in supporting our mission. Join us as we dive into their journey, insights, and the incredible impact they've had on our community.

How did you first hear of Perennial and what makes you support us?

Abi: We first met Kate at a trade show and later connected at several awards ceremonies. We love that Perennial supports both current industry workers and those who have had to leave, along with the wide range of services they offer.

Steve: I first heard about Perennial from my wife, Abi. I immediately thought it was a very worthwhile endeavour and I was keen to learn more. Over the years the charity has helped some of my guys when they had issues to deal with. On the back of this I have been keen to Support Perennial ever since and I am proud to be a member.

What are the two things that you love and hate about the industry the most?

Abi: I love that, even after 20 years in the commercial landscaping industry, each project is still so unique. What I dislike, now that I'm a bit older, are the early mornings!

Steve: The thing I love about this industry, is that I get to do what I love every day. I come from a long line of gardeners, tree surgeons and farmers that stretch back generations. Being outside, working with plants is hard-wired into me. I am lucky to have had the opportunities to work in the gardens that I have. 

How did you get into this sector and if you hadn’t done this, what would you have done?

Abi: Before I left school I wanted to be a window dresser, that was the plan anyway. I came from a recruitment background and joined my husband back when we were Kingston Garden Services with the aim of helping him with marketing for a year - that was over 20 years ago now.

Steve: As I’ve said before, all my family worked in land-based industries, and I'm proud to follow in their footsteps. After leaving Bristol at 18 and completing a business course at Kingston-Upon-Thames, I spent weekends during college building a maintenance round, which I enjoyed and helped pay the rent - there was no going back.

What event excites you the most in the horticultural calendar?

Abi: The APL Awards, it's a chance to catch up with suppliers, friends and treat our staff to a day out.

Steve: Spring; more light, more heat and more flowers!
